The Paris agreement target of 1.5C is measured over a decade or two, so a single year above that level does not mean the target has been missed, but does show the climate emergency continues to intensify. Every year in the past decade has been one of the 10 hottest, in records that go back to 1850. “A year of extreme weather showed just how dangerous life is at 1.5C. The Valencia floods, US hurricanes, the Philippines typhoons and Amazon drought are just four disasters last year that were worsened by climate change. There are many, many more,” said Dr Otto, who is the co-founder of World Weather Attribution, which studies the role of the climate crisis in extreme weather events. In December analysis by the group found that the average person was exposed to an additional six weeks of dangerously hot days in 2024, intensifying the fatal impact of heatwaves around the world. “The world doesn’t need to come up with a magical solution to stop things from getting worse in 2025,” Otto said. “We know exactly what we need to do to transition away from fossil fuels, halt deforestation and make societies more resilient.” This data comes as recent analysis by Oxfam GB revealed that less than a week and a half into 2025, the world’s richest 1% have already used up their fair share of the global carbon budget for 2025. Other days, Ghosn takes out his 120-foot yacht, which Nissan also claims, though he never leaves Lebanese waters.⁠ ⁠ With Lebanese, French and Brazilian passports, Ghosn once described himself as a citizen of the globe. But after fleeing from Japan by hiding in an audio-equipment box on a private jet, he remains an international fugitive and is stuck in Lebanon, hemmed in by arrest warrants issued by French and Japanese prosecutors. Lebanon—where Ghosn spent much of his childhood—doesn’t extradite its citizens.⁠ ⁠ Ghosn denies any wrongdoing. He has said he faced a drawn-out Japanese legal process and a near-perfect conviction rate, leaving him with no option but to flee Japan in December 2019.⁠ ⁠ A WSJ reporter recently met with Ghosn at a Lebanese university where he runs an executive leadership program.
